ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER MEMORIAL PROJECT
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women have served in our armed services in all wars, conflicts and peace operations that involved Australian forces, from the Boer War to Afghanistan.
In recognition of their service and sacrifice, a Memorial will be added to Brisbane’s Anzac Square, to be unveiled in 2018. This will be the first memorial added to Anzac Square since 1988.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dedicated Memorial Committee Queensland (ATSIDMCQ, chaired by Lorraine Hatton) and an Artistic Panel led by Adjunct Professor Jennifer Herd, short-listed four designs for the Memorial. All four designs were from individuals or consortia led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. An independent Aboriginal curator of national standing – Margo Neale – also contributed to the decision-making process.
These four designs (pictured above) were realised as maquettes and displayed at the Museum of Brisbane during December 2015 and January 2016. The selection of the final design was made by the ATSIDMCQ in late January and will be made public soon.
The memorial will be funded through community donations through a campaign led by Dame Quentin Bryce and Dr Noel Hayman.
