ERA ELIGIBILITY AND QUALITY IN THE CREATIVE ARTS

Peer Reviewed Venues

Many exhibition/ performance venues, film festivals generally need no particular argument for their editorial control status. These include: National and State funded venues in all fields; International festivals and biennials; Major curated public events and commissioned projects. Most regional galleries in Australia also have full-time directors and professional staff who select and validate the quality of what is exhibited. A hierarchical sequence from international to local for art galleries would be Museum of Modern Art in N.Y., National Gallery of Australia, Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane), Newcastle Region Gallery, Museum of Brisbane.

Major commercial galleries (usually defined as a member of the Australian Commercial Galleries Association) also have directors or dealers who may be very experienced and respected. However, here the claim for editorial or peer equivalent control is less secure and most cases have to be taken on their individual merits. A highly successful dealer may be well respected but deeply conservative or populist.
