an exhibition of artists books and prints texturing the artists book research focus at the Griffith Centre for Creative Arts Research.
From the 28th of June - 12th of July the Griffith Centre for Creative Arts Research (GCCAR) exhibited a selection of artists books and prints at the University of West England’s Centre for Fine Print Research, Bristol, UK. The exhibition follows a very successful abbe (artists books brisbane event) in 2015 and expands GCCCAR’s commitment to artists books as a critical field and will inform the shape of abbe 2017. The diverse breadth of artists books creative and research practice has for some time now exceeded the scope of any single research project investigating the field. This diversity will continue expanding as the material book, adopted by artists of all fields, continues to attract the attention of academic disciplines as well as the public. Inflection exemplifies this diversity at the same time as clarifying that print culture and the haptic are shaping the artists book research focus at the Griffith Centre for Creative Arts Research (GCCAR). Produced by staff and post graduate students from Queensland College of Art the books in this exhibition are printed, drawn, painted, altered, cut and set. These books resist being summed up, they remain opaque unless you touch them, spend time with them, unless you let them affect you as you affect them. Inflection featured a bricolage of books by 16 artists,
the Night Ladder Collective
Glen Skien & Erica Dunkley
It was supported by a number of lectures and coincided with the CFPR’s Summer Book Art Institute 2016 and Lenvention, a collaborative letterpress workshop lead by Angie Bulter a PhD candidate at the CFPR. The books in the exhibition were produced by staff and post graduate students from GCCAR at Queensland College of Art and exemplify the scope and range of the work being made within the artists book research focus at the GCCAR. Imbedded within Print Culture they address and extend the significance of the book’s capacity to address contemporary critical issues. Critical responses to artists books from Inflection and within the antipodes will shape the proceedings at the abbe 2017
