What is Nature? is an exhibition of photographs and moving images by Joachim Froese which depict urban nature. It features images taken on location as well as in the studio and investigates how the medium of photography in particular can be used to visualize human perceptions of the non-human world.
The work is inspired by art history and engages with current eco-critical theory and debate. It looks in particular at the Hortus Conclusus, the enclosed Renaissance garden, which constituted a well-known, if relatively short-lived early-modern motif in European painting
